The last warm weekends are over, there is frost on the asphalt in the morning, and it is time to put the motorcycle to sleep for the winter. It is worth doing this carefully: how the bike spends the winter decides whether it starts first time in spring. Here is how to prepare the motorcycle, what to do about insurance and tax, and where in Estonia you can leave the bike until spring.
Preparation: five simple steps.
Wash the motorcycle and dry it. Road dirt and salt eat metal and chrome over the winter, so the bike should go into the garage clean and dry. After the wash, put lubricant on the chain.
Think about the oil and the fuel. Old oil with wear products is better drained before winter, not after. Many mechanics advise filling the tank completely, so the metal inside rusts less, and adding a fuel stabiliser. Check the exact advice for your model in the manual.
Look after the battery. It is the main enemy of a spring start. It is better to keep the battery on a smart charger that maintains the charge itself, or to take it off and store it somewhere dry and warm.
Take the weight off the tyres. If you have a stand, put the motorcycle on it so the wheels do not sit for months in one spot. If you have no stand, pump the tyres to the right pressure and roll the bike a little from time to time.
Cover the motorcycle with a cover that lets air through. A tight plastic sheet holds moisture, and corrosion appears under it. Cover the exhaust and the air intake so mice do not move in.
Insurance: can you do without it in winter. According to the Estonian Motor Insurance Bureau (LKF), after the compulsory insurance contract ends a registered motorcycle may stay uninsured for up to 12 months if it is not ridden. But if you ride it on the road in that time, the police will fine you, and for a possible crash the owner will have to repay the whole compensation that was paid out. This rule ends earlier if the motorcycle is (temporarily) taken off the register or the owner changes.
The second option is to suspend the motorcycle’s registration at the Transport Administration (Transpordiamet). You can do this in the e-service for 1 to 24 months. The state fee is €15. For that time the owner is freed from the duty to insure the motorcycle. When the period ends, the motorcycle is registered again.
Tax: how it is tied to taking the bike off the register. Since 2025 motorcycles in Estonia pay an annual vehicle tax (mootorsõidukimaks). For motorcycles no older than 10 years the rates are: 51 to 125 cc, €30; 126 to 500 cc, €45; 501 to 1,000 cc, €60; 1,001 to 1,500 cc, €75; over 1,500 cc, €90. For motorcycles older than 10 years the rates are lower. You can work out the exact sum for your bike in the calculator of the Tax and Customs Board (EMTA).
The tax is calculated for the year from the data on 1 January. If the motorcycle is temporarily off the register, no tax is charged for that time. When the bike comes back on the register, the tax is counted only for the days left until the end of the year. For example, a motorcycle taken off in December and put back in April pays tax only from April.
Do not confuse a temporary suspension of registration with a suspended entry (peatatud kanne). That is a different status, and from 1 January 2027 tax will also be charged on those vehicles. If you are not sure which status your motorcycle has, check it in the Transpordiamet e-service.
Where to store it: motorcycle hotels in Estonia. If you have no garage of your own, you can leave the motorcycle at a motohotell. The prices below are taken from the companies’ own sites and are for one month.
Biker24 Motohotell, Tallinn. A warm guarded warehouse, and the motorcycles are insured. Package A costs €39.95: it includes collecting the motorcycle in Tallinn, charging the battery and an inspection. Package B is €34.95, package C for large motorcycles is €44.95. Prices include VAT, the minimum term is 4 months. We did not find the exact warehouse address on the site.
Motoee Garage, Paljassaare tee 18, Tallinn. Storage costs €34.90, the Plus package €39.90, and large motorcycles €55.90. The minimum term is 4 months. Transport in Tallinn is €60. You can also leave the motorcycle for a couple of days: €10 a day. map

TVC, Punane 42, Tallinn. A standard place is €25.41 including VAT when booked at the discount. There is no minimum term, but the battery has to come off. Receiving and handing back the motorcycle cost €13.18 each. map
Stalla, Läike tee 32/2, Peetri (Rae parish). €59 a month if you store for 6 months, without VAT. The temperature in the hall is above 18 degrees. map
Motoman OÜ, Vahi tee 10, Vahi, near Tartu. €30 a month, or €38 if you store for less than three months. A guarded room, battery charging, a cover and a discount on the spring service. map
HobiHoid, Männiku 1, Kandiküla, Tartu. It stores any hobby machines, including motorcycles. The building is guarded around the clock, once a month they check the battery charge and tyre pressure, and there is transport in a closed trailer. We did not find the price on the site. You need to ask. map
Before you sign a contract, check whether the motorcycle is insured in the warehouse, whether the room is heated and who looks after the battery.
In short. A good winter is a clean motorcycle, fresh oil, a charged battery and a dry place. You can save on insurance if the bike will definitely not go on the road. And a temporary suspension of registration frees you from both the insurance and the tax for the winter months of the new year. In spring a bike like that will thank you with an easy start and a calm opening of the season.
