The Onion Route along Lake Peipsi: Mustvee – Alatskivi
Old Believer villages, onion pies and Alatskivi castle. The shore road is narrow, and there is gravel between the villages.
- Distance. about 70 km, our estimate. Visit Estonia says about 80 km
- Road. narrow asphalt, gravel in places
- When to ride. May to September

Visit Estonia recommends the eastern route along Lake Peipsi. It joins the Onion Route, Sibulatee, and runs through Old Believer villages: from Mustvee through Kallaste to Kolkja, Kasepää and Varnja, each village looking different, and on to Alatskivi castle.
Stop at the prayer houses, the Old Believer museum in Kolkja and the onion farm where they bake onion pies. You can swim at the beaches in Kallaste and Kolkja. Kallaste has the only cash machine in the whole district.
The shore road is narrow, shared with cars and cyclists. Between the villages there is gravel, and the road to the village of Nina is not paved.
