To the Estonian islands by motorcycle: what to know about the ferries

18 Oct 2026 · 4 min read

A motorcycle on a ferry deck at sunset

Buy the motorcycle ticket in advance on the operator's website. In summer and at weekends the places go quickly. Arrive at the port 30–40 minutes before departure, and when you book choose the motorcycle category: it is cheaper than a car.

Ride on board slowly and follow the crew. Metal ramps and the deck can be slippery, especially in the rain. Put the motorcycle on its stand with a gear engaged and strap it to the frame. Some ferries provide straps, but it is safer to bring your own.

Because of queues and weather delays, check the timetable for the day you need before you go.

One-way prices for a motorcycle (from aggregator sites, based on the praamid.ee fares):

Saaremaa (Virtsu–Kuivastu, about 27 minutes): €4.85.

Hiiumaa (Rohuküla–Heltermaa, about 75 minutes): €6.00.

Kihnu (Munalaid–Kihnu): about €4.00. One site gives €4.00, but that source is less reliable.

Kihnu (from Pärnu): about €6.00.

Ruhnu: a separate fare and few places. The prices could not be found.

What to keep in mind:

The motorcycle ticket does not include the rider. You need a separate passenger ticket: €4.30 on the Saaremaa line and €4.85 on the Hiiumaa line. With the rider that is about €9.15 and €10.85 one way.

On Fridays after 13:00 from the mainland, and on Sundays after 13:00 from the islands, vehicles pay a 20% surcharge.

You can also take the big-island ferries in the general queue, but it is better to buy a ticket in advance at praamid.ee (https://www.praamid.ee/hinnad-ja-soodustused/). For Ruhnu and Kihnu a booking matters even more.
